Company History

Celebrating our 30th Anniversary in 2011, Britcom International Limited was founded by our late Chairman, Ray Urwin, as a specialist exporter of used commercial vehicles. The company expanded rapidly throughout the 1980’s, establishing a strong presence in African, Caribbean and Far Eastern markets, as well as a UK sales operation. In 1987, there was a move to larger premises with its own workshop and paintshop allowing all refurbishment of trucks to be carried out in-house, and the creation of a spare parts department.

Diversification occurred in the early 1990’s with the move into construction plant equipment and the acquisition of a chassis engineering business with a strong UK retail customer-base, which later became our current vehicle engineering department.

Sancton RoadThroughout the 1990’s Britcom continued to develop its global reputation for supplying quality equipment, with unrivalled after-sales support both in documentation and parts. Salesmen spent many weeks overseas each year visiting customers and building up those vital relationships of trust. Outside of the UK, we continued to look for investment opportunities, such as the purchase in 2003 of HVPS in Kenya who are the local Renault truck dealers and have also been appointed as a MAN Top Used Dealer for Kenya.

Space at the existing premises was increasingly at a premium so the decision was taken to purchase a new 14-acre site, still in the town of Market Weighton. This development finally came to fruition in July 2006 when the whole business relocated to new state-of-the art offices, workshops and paintshop, combined with a yard capable of storing over 300 vehicles. Since the move, Britcom has continued to develop and we now employ 70 people at our UK operation, plus another 25 in Kenya. We have been able to grow the UK side of the business, through the new equipment franchises we have been awarded, promotion of the bodyshop into new areas such as bus & coach repair and refurbishments, and our engineering department working very closely with the major truck manufacturers.

Ray Urwin sadly passed away in May 2009, but due to his foresight and development of a strong managerial structure, the business has prospered under the leadership of Joint Managing Directors, Chris Urwin and Paul Mercer.

Looking forward, we feel that there are many exciting opportunities for Britcom and with this in mind, the purchase has just been completed of an additional site for development in Market Weighton (adjacent to the current premises) which gives us another 4.5 acres to work with.
