Low Emission Zone Compliance
From 3 January 2012 there will be tighter emission standards and truck owners & operators will be affected if they are driving within the London Low Emission Zone.
What Is The London Low Emission Zone?
The London Low Emission Zone covers most of Greater London. To drive within it without paying a daily charge, your truck must meet certain emissions standards that limit the amount of particulate matter coming from the truck’s exhaust. Particulate matter is a type of pollution which can contribute to asthma, heart and lung disease and other respiratory illnesses.
If your truck doesn’t meet the LEZ emissions standards, you will still be able to drive with the LEZ by paying a daily charge. However, it would be preferable and in the long term perhaps more economical to ensure your truck meets the standards; that might mean purchasing a newer truck or fleet.
The Current Standard
The European Union sets limits, known as Euro standards, on the amount of pollution emitted by a vehicle’s exhaust. Until 2 January 2012, your vehicle has to meet the current Euro 3 standard.
The New Standard
From 3 January 2012 the required emissions standards will be tightened to Euro 4 for particulate matter. Euro 4 vehicles relate to those vehicles first registered as new with the DVLA on or after 1 October 2006.
What Do I Do Now?
If your vehicle is Euro 4 and meets the new standard, you don’t need to do anything.
